He was born in Georgia his family moved to Greece in the 2003. He is a two-time Olympic medallist, having won gold in 2004 (Athens) and bronze in 2012 (London). He also competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing where he was the Greek flagbearer in the Opening Ceremony. He is a cousin of another Olympic champion, Georgian judoka Zurab Zviadauri, who also won gold at the 2004 Olympic Games.
