In her London 2012 round of 16 bout against Poland's Aleksandra Socha, Vougiouka broke two of her teeth when the two fencers' masks collided.

She won the bout but just twenty minutes later had to compete against Korea's Kim Ji-Yeon in a quarterfinal, where the pain from the injury forced her to keep her mouth shut which also affected her ability to breathe.

Vougiouka took an 8–3 lead in the quarterfinal bout but was eventually defeated 15-12 to finish 5th while Kim went on to win gold.
