"The European Games have been talked about for decades. The EOC has decided that now is the time for Europe to have its continental Games. So, for the benefit of the athletes of Europe we are very pleased to welcome everyone to the first European Games in June of 2015 in the vibrant and beautiful seaside city of Baku, Azerbaijan. These games will reflect the energy and unity of Europe and bring new and meaningful competitions to our athletes as well as bind the European NOCs together with one common goal."

ORGANISATION

The European Games will be a multi-sport event for athletes from all of the National Olympic Committees in Europe and will be held every four years. The Games are owned, co-organized , and regulated by the European Olympic Committees (EOC). The European Games were created at the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees on December 8, 2012 in Rome, Italy, when an overwhelming majority of the National Olympic Committee of Europe voted for the creation of the European Games. At this General Assembly the right to host the Games was awarded to the City of Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Organizing Committee responsible for the inaugural European Games in Baku was established by decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Committee is chaired by the First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, member of the Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. Baku 2015 European Games Operation Committee (BEGOC) was established under the direction of the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee.

The CEO of BEGOC is the Minister of Youth and Sport Mr. Azad Rahimov and the Chief Operating Officer is Mr. Simon Clegg.

Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan states:

“Governed by Clause 32 of Article 109 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan and in order to conduct the 2015 inaugural European Games in Baku at the proper level, I hereby resolve as follows:

  • To establish the Organizing Committee for conducting the inaugural European Games in Baku in June-July 2015.
  • To task the Ministry of Youth and Sports jointly with the Mayor’s Office of Baku and the National Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan with preparing and submitting to the Organizing Committee a special action plan for conducting the first European Games.
  • To task the Organizing Committee with resolving all the issues relating to the organization of the first European Games in Baku in 2015.
  • To task the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan with resolving the issues arising from the present Order.”

 ABOUT THE GAMES

The European Games are an exciting and innovative new format that will be the continent’s first major multi-sport event. All members of the European Committees have been invited to attend and compete in Azerbaijan’s capital city Baku, situated on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The Opening Ceremony will be held on Friday 12 June 2015, with the Closing Ceremony celebrated on Sunday 28 June. The Games were designed and are to be regulated by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) and run with the support of the Baku 2015 European Games Operation Committee (BEGOC). Baku was awarded the honour of being the first host of the Games at the 41st EOC General Assembly in Rome, on 8 December 2012. The European Games will take place every four years thereafter, with the next competition due to be held in 2019.
