Azerbaijan underlined their boxing dominance by sweeping up four golden medals in the afternoon session at the Crystal Hall Arena.

The host country had already started the day with a title in the welterweight division (69kg). Tamerlan Abdullayev (Azerbaijan) was awarded the gold on a walkover after his opponent Onder Sipal (Turkey) failed to complete the medical examination.

When the action in the ring started there was a parade of success for the Azerbaijani team. Tayfur Aliyev (Azerbaijan) took the bantamweight (56kg) title by beating the strongly-fancied Samuel Kistohurry (France) in a close contest.

Kistohurry was the more aggressive boxer but Aliyev caught him repeatedly with counter punches to earn a split decision - a verdict which was greeted with a bemused shake of the head from the Frenchman.

Kistohurry hid his disappointment and admitted: "It was very close. We were equal. I have never fought against him before."

Aliyev said: "The Frenchman was my most difficult opponent. It's a very nice feeling but this was just a little competition for me. In June (at the European Games) I want to win again."

Lorenzo Sotomayor (Azerbaijan) confirmed his superiority in the light welterweight (64kg) division with a unanimous win against Hassan Amzile (France).

It was a cagey and tactical performance from the Cuban-born boxer against a young and strong frenchman and there was no repeat of the "Ali shuffle" he performed in his semi-final bout.

Sotomayor said: "The fight was hard. It was a very difficult bout. I concentrated mostly on the psychological aspects.

"It was a strategy, my opponent was also very dynamic. I needed to concentrate more on him than on the dancing."

Khaybula Musalov (Azerbaijan) kept the Azerbaijan flag flying with his split decision win against Yerik Alzhanov (Kazakhstan) in the middleweight (75kg) category but it was a tough encounter for the local man.

He revealed later that he was not at his best because he had been involved in a gruelling training camp before the tournament began.

Musalov said: "I was not at my best because I was very, very tired. I'll never train so hard again so close to a tournament. But this is just the pathway to the Baku European Games and the Olympic Games. This is just the first step."

Teymur Mammadov (Azerbaijan) was always the favourite to win the heavyweight (91kg) section and he did not let down the home fans with his 3-0 win over Seyda Keser (Turkey).

Mammadov dominated the contest from start to finish and Keser admitted: "He deserved it because he was dynamic, technical and more experienced. My rival is one of the best in the world in this category and this was a great experience for me."

The only boxer to halt the Azerbaijan monopoly was Bator Sagaluev (Russia) who was a unanimous victor in the light flyweight (49kg) section against Tinko Banabakov (Bulgaria).
