A review of BMX Cycling at the Baku 2015 European Games

BMX, the newest and most radical Cycling discipline in the Olympic programme, is known and loved for its high-octane racing which results in plenty of thrills and great unpredictability. At Baku 2015, however, the gold medals were won by two of the most hotly tipped riders.

Women’s champion Simone Christensen of Denmark had in fact tipped herself for victory – she said she was “the best European” after an event in early June – but managed to back up that statement with her on-track showing.

The world no.9 was the second-highest ranked rider in Baku behind Laura Smulders, but after the Dutch Olympic bronze medallist was hindered by a terrible start in the final, Christensen avoided trouble to claim gold in 37.074 seconds.

Three riders were involved in a calamitous crash on the second straight, but Frenchwoman Magalie Pottier and Aneta Hladikova of the Czech Republic stayed on track for the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

In the men’s event, France’s Joris Daudet dominated across the two days of competition and led the final from the first bend, before crossing the line first in 33.012 seconds.

He finished several bike lengths clear of silver medallist Twan Van Gendt of the Netherlands and Swiss bronze medallist David Graf.

The BMX competition enjoyed calm conditions on Sunday after strong winds earlier in the week had prompted a schedule change, with Saturday's motos rolled into Friday.
