Twenty-year-old missed out on a perfect individual score of 90 on his last arrow

Sjef van den Berg of the Netherlands opened the Archery men's individual 1/32 eliminations round on Saturday with a perfect three 10s.

He then shot another three 10s in the second set against Eduards Lapsins of Latvia to keep alive the chance of the first perfect individual score of 90 at the Baku 2015 European Games.

In the third set, he started with a 10 that was initially announced as a nine, followed by another 10, before finishing with an eight.

"I think I put too much pressure on myself to shoot the perfect score in all three ends," the Dutchman said.

"I did it in training before and I thought 'Well, I might as well do it in the competition'. It didn't quite work out as I planned it to.

"I knew the eight would be enough (for the 6-0 win) because my coach told me the first arrow was definitely in (for a 10). So it was a mix of maybe too much pressure on myself and maybe not enough pressure from my opponent."

The 20-year-old is having a terrific European Games, having shot the third highest score of 678 in the ranking round and being denied the Netherlands' national record by team-mate Rick van der Ven, who shot 679.

Van den Berg then won a bronze medal with Van der Ven and Mitch Dielemans in the men's team event.

Van den Berg next plays Yavor Vasilev Hristov in the 1/16 eliminations round match on Monday and worryingly for the Bulgarian, the perfect score is still the Dutchman's mind.

"I won't make any promises but I'll definitely try again because it's really fun to shoot 10s and that's what you do the sport for."
