The honour of being awarded the first ever European Games gold medal will go to the winner of the women's Mountain Bike Cross-country race in Baku on Saturday (13 June) afternoon.

The Mountain Bike Velopark, located in the north-west of the city, is the venue for the first medal event at the inaugural European Games. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 12:00, while the men's event will start at 15:30.

Among the medal contenders in the women's competition will be current world no.1 Jolanda Neff of Switzerland, Poland's Maja Wloszczowska, who is ranked no.5 in the UCI world rankings, and Yana Belomoina of Ukraine, the current world no.10.

In the men's race, Nino Schurter of Switzerland and Italy's Marco Aurelio Fontana, who took silver and bronze respectively at the London 2012 Olympic Games, should be among the top performers.

Their chances have been boosted with the news that London 2012 gold medallist Jaroslav Kulhavy, of the Czech Republic, will not compete in Baku because of a knee injury, according the Czech press attaché Alexandr Kliment.

Baku 2015 Mountain Bike competition manager Evangelos Diamantides said his team was proud to be hosting the first ever European Games medal: "It's a great responsibility for us," he said. "The top names in the sport are here and I don’t expect anything less than top-level competition."

The second medal of the Games will come in the women's triathlon competition, which starts at Bilgah Beachat 12:30 on Saturday.

Karate and wrestling will also award medals on Saturday evening, with a total 13 medal events on the second day of competition.
