Lebesson upsets top-ranked Ovtcharov to put France into finals

Emmannuel Lebesson proved to be the difference in the semi final of the men's Table Tennis team event against Germany at Baku Sports Hall on Sunday.

By defeating European number one Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the Frenchman secured the decisive match to add to France's two automatic wins due to Timo Boll being unfit to play.

"I never dreamed of a day like this. It's an incredible day," Lebesson said.

In the other semi final, Portugal defeated Austria 3-1, with youngster Joao Geraldo securing the victory by beating Stefan Fegerl of Austria 3-2.

Marcos Freitas expressed his pride at the way the Portuguese had played. "Austria is the third-best team in Europe according to the ranking, so I'm happy that we managed to beat them," he said.

Monday's bronze medal match between Germany and Austria begins at 17:00. The gold medal decider between France and Portugal will get under way at 20:00.
