A review of Volleyball at the Baku 2015 European Games

There was only one thing on the minds of Germany coach Vital Heynen and his team at the start of the international volleyball season: the Baku 2015 European Games men's gold medal.

Their withdrawal from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World League 2015 to focus on the Baku Games was a clear statement of the German team's intent.

They started the Games badly with a defeat to Russia, but went on to win five matches in straight sets before wreaking their Russian revenge in the semi-final.

Germany defeated Bulgaria for the second time in the tournament in the final and received the maximum 50 points on offer towards the qualification tournament for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

"Everything went to plan in the way that you can plan sport," Heynen said after winning gold. "We came here to win gold and we won gold. That was the plan."

Bulgaria had a fine run in Baku but the gold medal match was a step too far for coach Nikolay Jeliakov's team. They only lost twice all tournament, both to the eventual winners.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the men's event was how poorly world no.4 side Italy faired, losing all five of their matches, but the game of the tournament was Turkey's narrow win over Azerbaijan. The hosts came back from two sets down before narrowly losing the decider, having brought the crowd to boiling point along the way.

In the women's competition, Turkey showed the perfect combination of skill, strength and speed as they swept aside Poland 3-0 in a one-sided final to take the title. Serbia won bronze, defeating Azerbaijan 3-2 in a tense game.

Despite a narrow defeat to their gold-medal opponents in their first match, Turkey dominated Pool A and topped the group before beating Russia 3-1 and Azerbaijan 3-2 en route to the final. They won seven of their eight games played and lost only six sets throughout the whole tournament.

Poland couldn't summon the power of their opening game and a tired display in the final game cost them, but Serbia may have hoped for more than bronze after starting the competition strongly and topping Pool B.

Azerbaijan were cheered on by the noisy home support in Crystal Hall 1 throughout, and were unfortunate not to win a medal after a series of stirring performances that will give them optimism for the future. They were edged out by the eventual champions having taken what looked like a commanding lead in the deciding set, only to falter at the death.
