A review of Badminton at the Baku 2015 European Games

With three golds, one silver and one bronze, Denmark reigned supreme in Badminton at the first European Games.

After winning the women's singles title, 21--year-old Line Kjaersfeldt, known as Denmark's 'Badminton Princess', said: "I think they should call me the queen now."

Kjaersfeldt's 24-year-old compatriot Emil Holst will have to wait a little longer to be named the Badminton prince of Scandinavia's southern-most country after losing the men's singles final to Spain's Pablo Abian 21-12, 23-21.

Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen had led the Danish charge by winning the team's first gold medal on Saturday evening, beating Russia's Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov in straight sets.

And Denmark ended the tournament on a high, with a third gold. Sara Thygesen and Niclas Nohr's roar heralded yet another win as they took down Gaetan Mittelheisser and Audrey Fontaine of France.

While Denmark dominated a week's worth of world-class badminton at Baku Sports Hall, other European greats also made their presence felt. Fiery men's singles champion and softly-spoken Spaniard Abian being just one.

Bulgaria's no.1-seeded Stoeva sisters lived up to expectations and were triple-winners in their final, claiming women's doubles gold, the first Bulgarian gold of the European Games, and the hearts of the Bulgarian men's volleyball team. The 20-strong group made it sound like there were thousands of Bulgarian spectators in the stands.

The Irish were unlucky twice. No.1 seed Scott Evans failed to make the podium in the men's singles, and the no.1 seeds in the mixed doubles Chloe and Sam Magee missed out on the gold many expected them to take. But there was a silver lining: the bronze medals in the men's and women's doubles will be cherished.

Finally, Belgium's Lianne Tan was the only unseeded player to make a badminton final. Her story didn't get the fairytale ending many were hoping for, but by winning a precious silver medal and staging an incredible semi-final comeback against Spain's Clara Azurmendi, 'Tiny Tan' will inspire a future generation of Belgian badminton players.
