A review of Boxing at the Baku 2015 European Games

With six gold medals out of a possible 10, Azerbaijan dominated the men's boxing tournament in Baku's Crystal Hall.

Hometown hero Teymur Mammadov proved just as good in the light heavyweight category as he had been in the heavyweight division, where he won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

And in the semi-finals and final, Mammadov again overcame world-class opponents in Russia’s Pavel Silyagin and Italian Valentino Manfredonia.

Azerbaijani super heavyweight Mahammadrasul Majidov missed out on the opportunity to fight for gold, however, having to bow out of the tournament after his quarter-final fight, when he failed the medical exam with a cut above the eye. His withdrawal meant that the dream final between him and Joe Joyce did not materialise.

The British fighter impressed throughout the tournament, recording two first-round technical knockouts, before beating the elusive Frenchman Tony Yoka on points in the semi-final. A powerful physical display in the final saw Joyce pick up the gold although the fight ended with his opponent, Gasan Gimbatov, on his way to hospital. Fortunately the Russian was not seriously hurt and after a night of observation was free to return to the Athletes Village.

Other Azerbaijani men's gold medals went to Elvin Mamishzada (flyweight), Albert Selimov (lightweight), Collazo Sotomayor (light welterweight), Parviz Baghirov (welterweight) and Abdulkadir Abdullayev (heavyweight), who won on a walkover after his Ukrainian opponent Gevorg Manukian was withdrawn on medical grounds.

Russia picked up two gold medals, through light flyweight Bator Sagaluev and bantamweight Bakhtovar Nazirov, but it took until the very last bout of the tournament to see a big upset.

Irish middleweight Michael O'Reilly took some of the shine off the Azerbaijani glory by upsetting and out-pointing big favourite Xaybula Musalov.

His gold was Ireland's third medal of the boxing tournament, taking his country to third place in the men's boxing medal standings, behind Azerbaijan (six golds, one silver and two bronze), and Russia (two gold, two silver and three bronze).

The women’s competition brought together some of the world’s biggest names, including Olympic champions Katie Taylor and Nicola Adams. Both commented on the historic chance to become the first ever European Games champions, with Adams predicting: “I was the first woman to win an Olympic gold, and the first to win a gold in the Commonwealth Games. And I will be the first woman to win in the European Games. It can only be once, and I'm after it.”

Adams and Taylor did not disappoint, delivering performances to match their reputations, as Taylor took the final women's Boxing gold medal of the Games in the lightweight category after Adams had triumphed in the flyweight division.

Despite the success of the British and Irish top contenders, overall, Russia were the biggest medal winners in the women's tournament, with two golds and one bronze from the five weight categories.

Elena Saveleva took the bantamweight gold and Anastasiia Beliakova won the light welterweight title, while Saiana Sagataeva, in the flyweight division, picked up a bronze medal.
Britain were second in the medal table with one gold (Adams) and one bronze through Sandy Ryan in the light welterweight.

Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands won the other women's boxing gold medal, in the middleweight category.
