A review of Canoe Sprint at the Baku 2015 European Games

Hungary dominated the Canoe Sprint competition at the Baku 2015 European Games by winning five gold and five bronze medals over three days at the Kur Sport and Rowing Centre in Mingachevir.

Danuta Kokak led the way with gold medals in the women's kayak single (K1) 500m and (K4) 500m before rounding off her Games with bronze in the (K1) 200m in the final session on Tuesday afternoon.

"I am tired, It is my third medal and it was hard," said Kozak after her final race - the only one of the six races, including heats, that she did not win.

Miklos Dudas was another of the Hungarian paddlers taking home gold after a commanding performance in the explosive men's single kayak 200m, in which Britain's reigning Olympic champion Ed McKeever was forced into third.

Hungarian dominance might have been even more complete had countries been able to submit more than one entrant to each event.

"The competition in Hungary is so tough, that it's very hard to qualify for international championships," said Dudas after winning gold on Tuesday afternoon. "That's one of the reasons for the success of Hungarian canoeing. You can never skip a training session. You have to work hard every day."

Germany had initially threatened to upset the traditional Hungarian stranglehold over canoe sprinting on the second morning of competition, when Max Hoff and Sebastian Brendel won the men's kayak and canoe single events over 1000m respectively.

"I'm happy with this medal because it might be a one-off for me," Hoff said before returning on Tuesday afternoon to take another in the K1 5000m.

The most remarkable performance on the Kur River course came from Belarus's Maryna Litvinchuk, however. She climbed back into her boat less than 50 minutes after winning the women's kayak double (K2) 200m gold on Tuesday to take the 5000m race by a comfortable margin of 17 seconds.

The loudest cheers heard along the riverbank in Mingachevir were reserved for Azerbaijan's Valentin Demyanenko, who missed out on gold in the men's canoe single (C1) 200m by eight hundredths of a second.

"I would like to have taken gold. I couldn't do what I wanted to do so unfortunately I got silver. But it doesn't matter, everything feels great," he said.
