A review of Shooting at the Baku 2015 European Games

Petra Zublasing and Valerio Luchini both landed a second gold medal of the Games on the final day of Shooting as Italy finished top of the competition medal table.

Italians won two of the final three gold medals on offer on Monday 22 June, both in mixed team events, as the shooting competition drew to a close after seven days of action.

Zublasing teamed up with her boyfriend, Niccolo Campriani, to win the mixed team 10m air rifle having already blown away the field in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions earlier in the week.

That was after Luchini and Diana Bacosi won the mixed team skeet on Monday afternoon, meaning Italy's shooters left Baku with 10 medals to their name - four gold, three silver and three bronze.

"The general movement in Italy has been very good and there has been lots of work done," Zublasing said afterwards. "I think we can build on that in the future and maybe that also explains why we did so well here.

"I hope shooting will become more popular with these medals, and more young children will come to the range and try it out because it is a beautiful sport that teaches you a lot about yourself and your personality."

Campriani was pleased to get his hands on gold after collecting silver in the men's 10m air rifle on 16 June.

"How many athletes can say that they won a gold medal with their girlfriend?" He said afterwards. "Not many, so that was special. Today, luckily, Petra was by my side because without her I couldn't have finished on top of the podium."

Serbian Damir Mikec's double victory, meanwhile, helped Serbia finish with four gold medals at the Baku Shooting Centre.

Mikec won the men’s 10m air pistol and 50m pistol after Andrea Arsovic and Zorana Arunovic had struck gold in the women’s 10m air rifle and 10m air pistol respectively.

"It's amazing," Mikec said after winning Serbia’s fourth shooting gold. "We are a small country with bad shooting ranges. We don't have many good conditions, but the government helps us a lot so we can travel and have camps in other countries - so thanks to them."

One of the more heart-warming tales was the performance of the shooters from San Marino, with all three members of their team winning a medal.

Manuel Mancini and Alessandra Perilli won bronze in the mixed team trap on 18 June, two days after Alessandra's older sister, Arianna Perilli, claimed silver in the women's trap.

Mancini said: "There was just the two of us, plus Alessandra's sister, and we all got medals. It's 100 per cent. Not bad at all for such a small country."

Best match
British gold medallist Amber Hill and Italian silver medallist Diana Bacosi could barely be separated in the women's skeet gold-medal match. In the end, the 17-year-old Brit won in a shoot-off that was almost as long as the semi-final and final combined.

Biggest surprise
Three of the four London 2012 Olympic champions competing at Baku failed to even qualify for the final of their event - Alin Moldoveanu of Romania in the men's 10m air rifle, Niccolo Campriani of Italy in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions and another Italian, Jessica Rossi, in the women's trap.

Biggest controversy
Andreas Loew of Germany was denied a place in the double trap gold-medal match by what he described as an error from the timekeeper. Loew was given two yellow cards and as a result then received a double miss from the referee. Without that double penalty, Loew would have been in the final and guaranteed a medal. He ended up losing the bronze-medal contest.

Best quote
"To shoot with Petra is going to be a special moment. This winter I shot against her and it was really unpleasant. This time we are going to be in the same team and that is good – you don't want to shoot against your girlfriend."
