Switzerland’s Jolanda Neff has claimed the first-ever European Games gold medal by winning the women’s Mountain Bike event at the Baku 2015 Games on Saturday (13 June).

The 22-year-old world no.1 lived up to her pre-race tag of favourite with a dominant display at the Mountain Bike Velopark, finishing in one hour 31 minutes and five seconds.

The battle for silver and bronze was much tighter, with Switzerland’s Kathrin Stirnemann finishing behind her compatriot and just ahead of Poland's Maja Wloszczowska.

"It's an amazing event here at the first European Games, and to win the first gold medal feels amazing," said Neff. "It's really cool that my team-mate Kathrin Stirnemann took silver and that my very good mate Maja Wloszczowska took the bronze medal."

Stirnemann said: "It's a great feeling. I didn't expect a podium because I was struggling a bit with my health in the last few weeks, but it was just perfect when everything went well."
