After failure in individual sabre, Fencing star leads team to success

World champion Olga Kharlan, who failed to make an impact in the individual sabre after being billed as the star of Fencing in Baku, bounced back with a classy finish to seal the women's team sabre event for Ukraine.

Kharlan, who is so well known in her homeland that she has been involved in politics and modelling, was involved in a special advertising film for Baku. But she made an early exit from the individual event in the preliminary stages.

But, sporting fluorescent yellow shoes on the final night of action, Kharlan produced a brilliant comeback in the deciding leg of the team event to secure a 45-43 victory over Italy.

The Italians had gone into the final leg 40-36 ahead but Kharlan, an Olympic champion in team in 2008, turned the match around completely with some attacking fencing to grab the gold together with Alina Komashchuk, Olena Kravatska  and Olga Zhovnir.

"It is tough for an Olympic champion. Everybody has high expectations," Kharlan said. "I try to detach myself from this, but it doesn't always work.

"We are very happy. In the individual event we didn't get a medal, but now we got at least one with the team. For our country the most important thing probably is that our anthem is heard by the whole world."

Russia took the bronze medal after a 45-29 defeat of France.
