Malta long distance runners have used a training camp in France to improve their results this year.

A group of the country’s top long distance runners went to Font Romeu in the French Pyrénées for some high altitude training. The group of 800m-5000m runners included Simon Spiteri, Neil Brimmer, Matthew Croker, Dario Mangion, Christian Luke Chetcuti, Andrew Grech, Mark Herrera, Charles Cilia, Clive Gerada, Giselle Camilleri, Lisa Bezzina, Francesca Borg, MonaLisa Camilleri and Carmen Hili. The trip was supported by Athletics Malta (MAAA) and the Maltese Olympic Committee. And it was used to prepare the Maltese runners for two important competitions this summer.

"This year we have the Games for the Small States of Europe in Iceland as well as the European Games in Baku so the MAAA and MOC are doing their utmost to provide athletes with the best possible assistance," Malta coach Mr. Ivan Rozhnov said in the Times of Malta.

"When training at high altitude, there are huge changes in the physiological adaptation of long and middle distance runners," Mr. Rozhnov said.

"It happens in just a matter of days. Of course, the longer the period, the bigger the impact."

Mr. Rozhnov noted that the women’s marathon world record holder, Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain, the Somali-born British runner Mo Farah, double London 2012 Olympic champion, and others have prepared for major competitions by going to Font Romeu.

Mr. Rozhnov was impressed with the dedication of the athletes, saying: "The commitment of the athletes at the training camp was remarkable. We were training twice a day following a strict regime."

Maltese runners have shown at competitions that the hard work has paid off.

Mangion did a personal best at 3000m and Bezzina had a similar result.

MonaLisa Camilleri cut 40 seconds off her time from December and Giselle Camilleri set a national record indoor, according to Mr. Rozhnov.

In the Malta Marathon, Grech set a personal best and was the first Maltese to finish while Herrera and Gerada were first and second in the half marathon.

"This trip will definitely transform their form for the track races in March. All of them really appreciated the effort of the MAAA and MOC in helping them maximise their potential," Mr. Rozhnov said.

"We are now looking forward to the coming season and those selected will surely benefit from a training camp like this."
