A review of Artistic Gymnastics at the Baku 2015 European Games

Artistic Gymnastics took place over four days at Baku 2015, featuring 14 medal events.

Pre-competition attention in the women’s competition was focused on European all-around champion Giulia Steingruber of Switzerland as she prepared to do battle with Russia’s Olympic all-around medallists Aliya Mustafina and Victoria Komova.

The trio were also tipped for success in the apparatus finals, with each gymnast having won at least one apparatus gold medal in Olympic, world championship or European championship competitions.

The individual all-around event saw Mustafina beat Steingruber to the gold, with Dutchwoman Lieke Wevers in third place. These medallists also dominated the podium in the apparatus events, with Steingruber placing first on vault (14.999) and floor exercise (14.266), and third on balance beam (13.700), London 2012 champion Mustafina took gold on uneven bars (15.400), and Wevers prevailed on balance beam (14.200).

Day two of the competition saw the Russian men win the team event, followed by Ukraine and Azerbaijan. Russia’s women gymnasts also prevailed in the team competition, leaving Germany and the Netherlands to claim silver and bronze, respectively.

The Russian trio of Mustafina, Komova and Seda Tutkhalyan romped to a total of 116.897 to win gold, outscoring their nearest rivals Germany by 6.50 points.

Nikita Ignatyev led Russia to the gold medal in the men's team final with 178.963, ahead of Oleg Verniaiev’s Ukraine on 177.429, and host nation Azerbaijan, who narrowly claimed bronze with a score of 174.195 ahead of Belarus on 174.130.

Verniaiev had his revenge in the men’s individual all-around, however, taking gold ahead of his former teammate Oleg Stepko, who now competes for Azerbaijan, and Ignatyev, who settled for bronze.

The Ukrainian’s fortunes faded in the apparatus finals, which saw him win just one medal across five events, gold on the vault. Oleg Stepko took the gold on parallel bars, as well as a silver on pommel horse and a bronze medal on vault.

Greek gymnast Eleftherios Petrounias reigned supreme on rings, while Spain’s Rayderley Miguel Zapata Santana, Saso Bertoncelj of Slovenia and German Fabian Hambuechen took the titles on floor, pommel horse and high bar, respectively, in a day that saw six newly crowned European Games champions from six different nations.

Overall, however, Russia was the dominant power in the Baku 2015 Artistic Gymnastics competition, taking four of the 14 available golds, and claiming 11 medals overall, seven more than the next-best performing country, Switzerland.
