Fourth-place finish enough to see young German through to final

Germany's Cao-Tri Le Nguyen admits he sometimes has problems keeping his mind on the job, but the 17-year-old showed great powers of concentration to make the final of the men's 3m springboard competition at the Baku Aquatics Centre on Saturday.

The youngster, who also competes in the platform, did not blink an eye when a power outage occurred just as he was about to dive for the eighth time.

"It was okay. I was relaxed when this happened," said Le Nguyen, who was fourth after the 10-dive morning preliminary round.

"I think my performance went fine and I hope I can win a medal, but my discipline is actually platform. I just have to keep calm so I think I can do it."

His coach, Christoph Bohm, was delighted with the way the teenager kept his focus during the lengthy preliminary round.

"He is somebody who has problems with that during long competitions, and when we had the break because of the technical problems he was the one who was next, but it was okay."

Bohm believes Le Nguyen, who was born in Germany to Vietnamese parents, can win a medal on Saturday evening.

"I want to push him and say, 100 per cent, you have the possibility to go forward."

Russia's Ilia Molchanov (528.45 points), Britain's James Heatly (508.95) and Yury Nauroza of Belarus (500.60) lead the way, with Le Nguyen close behind (499.25).

Saturday's diving finals begin at 19:00 with the women's synchronised 3m competition.
