British Olympic champion too strong for Pole in frenetic flyweight final

Nicola Adams, the first female Olympic Boxing champion, has become the first European Games Boxing champion by beating Sandra Drabik for the flyweight (48-51kg) title on Thursday afternoon.

The British fighter, who won flyweight gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, took the first Boxing gold medal of the Baku 2015 Games after a frenetic bout against the gutsy and talented Polish pugilist.

Two of the judges – from Sweden and Colombia – awarded the fight 39-37 to Adams, while the third – from Tunisia – scored it 38-38.

"I feel absolutely over the moon," said Adams. "I would like to say thank you to everybody – to the people in GB boxing and my personal coach, my friends and my family, everyone that helped me to get here."

Adams was delighted to return to the top of the podium after a shoulder injury kept her out of the 2014 world championships.

"After what happened, it makes this win even more special for me. I had a bit of a rocky start, but I came good in the end. I couldn't have done that without everyone behind me.

"She (Drabik) is a good opponent and she has improved a lot over recent years. I knew that it was going to be quite tough, but I knew I would get through it."

Adams, Drabik and bronze medallist Elif Coskun have qualified for the world championships in Doha in October 2015, which is one of the main qualifying tournaments for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

"Now I am on to get qualification to Rio," said Adams.
