Poland knock home nation out of Volleyball competition

Poland swept Azerbaijan 3-0 in men's Volleyball as they maintained their 100 per cent record at the European Games on Saturday.

The European champions dominated the hosts from the first points, before winning the three sets 25-14, 25-13 and 25-17.

“It wasn’t an easy game. We knew that Azerbaijan could give us a tough game, but our tactics were good and that helped us a lot”, said Szymon Romac, who scored 15 points for his team.

“We have won four games out of four now and we are feeling confident. We came here to beat everyone, so we are looking forward now. We want to win every game.

“We are not worried about who we face in the next round. We will just try to win the game and keep progressing in the competition.”

Azerbaijan head coach Bulent Karslioglu said he was proud of his team despite their four defeats and added: “We had a lot of defeats, but these defeats became a part of the inevitable experience they gained. We are a very young team. We need time to become a strong team.”

In their last Pool A game, Azerbaijan will take on Turkey, while Poland will play Finland.

In the evening’s Pool B game, Germany beat Italy 3-0 to seal their progress to the quarter-finals and send the Italians out of the competition.

The Germans were made to work hard for the win, claiming the sets 25-18, 25-22 and 25-23.

"It wasn't an easy game. Italy had a really good match. The good thing is we know that we can play better and now we have to raise our game", said Germany's Jochen Schops. "There are lots of good teams in the competition, but first we have to play Belgium and then we will see what team we play next."

Germany play Belgium in their last Pool B game, while Italy face Russia.

In the day’s earlier Pool A games, France defeated Turkey 3-0 and Serbia dismissed Finland by the same scoreline.

In Pool B, Slovakia beat Belgium 3-1, and there was a shock when Bulgaria beat Russia 3-1.

Pool A's qualifiers are now settled, with France, Poland, Turkey and Serbia through, with Russia and Bulgaria progressing from Pool B.
