A review of Rhythmic Gymnastics at the Baku 2015 European Games

A close contest was expected in Rhythmic Gymnastics, with the sport’s reigning queen, 2013 and 2014 world individual all-around champion Yana Kudryavtseva, and her Russian teammate Margarita Mamun tipped as two strong contenders.

The 2014 world all-around bronze medallist Ganna Rizatdinova of Ukraine and Melitina Staniouta, the Belarusian 2015 European championship triple medallist in individual events, were candidates to foil Russia’s potential sweep of the individual titles.

However, the outcome was a masterclass by the Russian gymnasts, who claimed seven of the eight golds, four of which went to Kudryavtseva.

The 17-year-old Muscovite dominated the individual all-around final with a winning total of 76.100 points, leaving silver to Mamun with 75.650 points and bronze to Staniouta with 73.100 points.

Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria had been expected to do battle for group titles, and Russia duly secured first place in the all-around final, though Israel pipped Belarus to claim a surprise silver.

The Belarusians were on top of the podium during the group clubs and hoops final, however, following a commanding performance to Between Heaven and Earth, which scored 17.600 for gold.

Israel again credited themselves with a fine performance for silver with 17.500, while Ukraine took bronze with 17.150 points.

In the group ribbon final, Russia's intricate performance to Spartacus conquered all and earned them gold with 18.000 points. Ukraine claimed silver with 17.250, and Israel took bronze with 17.100.

Kudryavtseva again came to the fore in the apparatus finals, collecting gold in ball (18.950), clubs (19.200) and ribbon (19.000).

Teammate Mamun, the only gymnast to outscore Kudryavtseva by qualifying over her for the hoop final, reaffirmed herself by taking that apparatus' gold with 18.850.
