Reitz holds nerve for pistol gold

Reitz gold
AIJAN - JUNE 21: Gold medalist Christian Reitz of Germany and bronze medalist Oliver Geis of Germany pose with the medals won during the Men's Shooting 25m Rapid Fire Pistol on day nine of the Baku…
Germans denied chance to battle it out for the title

Christian Reitz of Germany won the men's 25m rapid fire pistol final, after world no.1 Oliver Geis was denied a third chance to face his compatriot for a shot at gold in unusual circumstances.

Geis and Russian silver medallist Alexei Klimov were tied on 27 hits each out of 35, two behind Reitz, and entered a shoot-off to determine who would face him in a gold medal round.

Both shot three out of five to force a second shoot-off, at which point the electronic scoring system appeared to stop working, resulting in a delay of several minutes.

Klimov and Geis then seemed to score four each in the second, and Geis fired his first round in a third attempt to split the pair before Klimov raised his hand to officials to point out a scoring discrepancy on his monitor from the second showdown.

"It was a technical mistake and I saw it on my monitor. I did five hits but they said just four hits," Klimov said.

After a further delay of seven minutes, Klimov's claim was upheld, relegating Geis to bronze.

"I don't know about the result from Klimov and what was going on," Geis said. "He was a better shooter and won silver and that's okay. I have a good result with my bronze medal and am happy about that."

Reitz had led from the first round and, despite the delay, managed to hit the target four times. Added to his two-shot advantage over Klimov, that rendered the Russian's final five shots irrelevant.

"I feel great," Reitz said. "It's perfect. It is the first European Games so I am very happy. The competition is great - it is like the Olympics. The range, Athletes Village and organisation are good and the gold medal at the end is perfect."
