A review of the Basketball 3x3 competition at Baku 2015

Russia netted an unexpected double at Baku 2015 after dominating proceedings at the Basketball Arena over the four days of European Games competition.

There was an air of déjà-vu in the final rounds as Russia, Spain and Slovenia all made it to the semi-finals of both the men's and women's tournament. Russia had to survive a scare earlier in the knock-out stages, however, needing a spectacular last-ditch score from Andrey Kanygin against Estonia to keep their hopes alive.

From that wobble, they never looked back, comfortably despatching Slovenia in their semi while, on the other side of the draw, Spain’s tense win over Serbia seemed to have taken too much out of their players. Russia ran out 18-14 winners thanks to a master-class from Aleksandr Pavlov, who grabbed eight points.

"Our advantage is speed," reflected Pavlov. "We are faster. They wanted to push us, they couldn’t, and we used our speed."

A short-handed Serbia dealt with the dwindling impact of star player Dusan Domovic-Bulut, due to an injury sustained in the semi-final against Spain, to beat Slovenia 21-14 and claim the bronze medal.

Russia's women handled the weight of expectation to produce some accurate outside shooting and overcome Ukraine 22-17 in their final.

"We had to win," said Mariia Cherepanova. "We knew that Russia won a lot of gold medals. We wanted to be in this list and give another gold medal to our country."

Spain picked up bronze to go with their men's silver as Slovenia again went away empty-handed. The much-vaunted Azerbaijan side were looking strong in the early stages but were edged out by Spain in the quarter-finals to the dismay of the home crowd.

It was a similar story in the men's competition, but a star was found in the form of Marshall Obrain Moses, who racked up an incredible 12 points in their quarter-final defeat.
