Women's Water Polo final goes to penalties after nail-biting climax

Russia rallied after a poor start against Spain to force a penalty shoot-out and win the women's Water Polo gold medal on Saturday.

Andrei Belofastov's Russian side fell 7-4 behind, but Daria Gerzanich then scored three times, including the final two goals, to secure a 10-10 tie and send the match to a shoot-out.

Both teams scored their first six penalties before Evgeniia Golovina saved Paula Crespi Barriga's second effort and broke Spanish hearts.

"We began the game so badly, I don’t know what happened," said coach Belofastov, who joined his players in the pool after the final penalty.

"The first period, for us, was a disaster, a catastrophe because we gave the ball away, got too many exclusions, and in the second half we changed the tactics. After 7-4, I began to believe.

"The penalties are Russian roulette and today I am happy because we played this game and my young players won."

Greece also recovered from a slow start to build a four-goal lead going into the final period of the bronze medal game, only to be left hanging on and indebted to their goalkeeper Ioanna Stamatopoulou. She pulled off a series of stunning saves in the closing stages, including a defiant last stand, to secure bronze with an 8-7 victory.
