Valeriya Filenkova and Daria Kulagina take Synchronised Swimming title

The Synchronised Swimming duets free routine was won by the Russian duo Valeriya Filenkova and Daria Kulagina at the Baku Aquatics Centre on Monday morning.

Austrians Anna-Maria Alexandri and Eirini-Marina Alexandri won silver, while Yana Nariezhna and Yelyzaveta Yakhno of Ukraine took bronze.

"We are so excited. It is a great responsibility being juniors representing our country and great to win the first medal," said Filenkova.

The Russian coach Yuliya Grevtseva was proud of the swimmers, saying; "There were a few things that could have been improved but it was a fine performance. It’s difficult to know how good they will become but it’s a good start for us. They are very different characters but they complement each other."

Russia finished on 169.0568 points, while Austria had 162.8395 points and Ukraine won bronze with 161.6500.

Nariezhna and Yakhno jumped for joy after their score was announced and confirmed that they had overtaken Spanish pair Julia Esquivel and Irene Carmelo's 160.8046.

No less than three sets of twins competed in the final, including Charlotte and Laura Tremble from France, Austria's Alexandri triplet sisters and identical twins Bregje and Noortje De Brouwer from the Netherlands.
