Wrestling twins reap benefits of childhood rivalry

Serbian siblings put their squabbles aside for Greco-Roman glory

Twin brothers Mate and Viktor Nemes have to stay in separate rooms to prevent them fighting, but the Greco-Roman wrestlers believe sibling rivalry is the key to their success.

“I think it’s good because we can train together and (Mate) can help me, but we can’t be in the same room now because we are having a fight day every day," said Viktor, who will compete in the 75kg Greco-Roman competition at the Baku 2015 European Games.

The 21-year-olds, from the village of Senta in northern Serbia, used to compete at the same weight category, but will feature in different events in Baku.

“There was always a lot of competition between us over who would be better,” said Mate, who will take part in the 71kg category.

The siblings believe having a permanent sparring partner so close to hand has helped their wrestling careers, but these days they also like their own space.

"When we were at the training camp it took 10 days before we started to fight. So it is better that we live in separate rooms,” said Viktor.

Serbia is aiming for at least three wrestling medals. The team's biggest star, two-time European championship bronze medallist Aleksandar Maksimovic, said the group's family spirit could help them.

“We started to prepare for this in February and we have only been at home for 10 to 15 days since then,” he said.

“So we live together all year round, we hang out in our spare time and there are never any fights.”

As long as the Nemes twins stay in different rooms, that is.
