Boxer Ihor Sopinskyi has defended his Ukrainian national title while two big name fighters have ended up with bronze medals.

Sopinskyi defeated Maksym Fatych in the 52kg final in the Ukrainian nationals in Nikolaev to repeat his title, moving him a step closer to reaching the Baku 2015 European Games. Ukraine boxing officials will name their athletes for Baku 2015 at a later date.

While Sopinskyi defended his crown, two of Ukraine's bigger amateur boxers collected only bronze medals.

The London 2012 64kg silver medallist Denys Berinchyk lost in the semi-finals to Ivan Danchev, who lost in the final to the AIBA Youth World Championship silver medallist Viktor Petrov.

«Believe me, Berinchyk was not the famous master of the ring as he was four or five years ago,» Ukraine head coach Dmitry Sosnowski, who also won silver at the 2011 World Championships, told Sport Express.

The 2012 Olympian and 2013 60kg European champion Pavlo Ishchenko meanwhile had to settle for bronze after pulling out injured of his semi-final bout with former European junior champion and eventual winner Alexander Melenyuk.

A number of boxers jumped to the top of the podium after coming close in the 2014 Ukrainian nationals. Ievgenii Barabanov beat Igor Nesterov to take the 69kg gold medal after losing to Yaroslav Samofalov in the final last year. Nazar Kurotchyn (49kg), Oleh Dovhun (56kg) Denys Solonenko (81kg) and Vladyslav Sirenko (+91kg) all captured titles after claiming bronze in 2014.

The other two golds went to Vladyslav Voitaliuk at 75kg and Rostislav Archipenko at 91kg.
