A review of Taekwondo at the Baku 2015 European Games

Azerbaijan emerged as Europe's Taekwondo powerhouse at the Baku 2015 European Games as their athletes rose to the occasion to claim five medals, three of them gold.

Russia also took home five medals, two of them gold, while Great Britain claimed two gold and a bronze.

Overall, the 32 medals were shared between 13 National Olympic Committees.

Patimat Abakarova set the tone for the Azerbaijani team when she won bronze in the women's -49kg on day one. Aykhan Taghizade then stormed to gold in the men's -68kg, Farida Azizova added a silver from the women's -67kg, Milad Beigi Harchegani followed up with another gold (men's -80kg) and Radik Isaev won the final gold for his team.

Great Britain's 2012 Olympic champion Jade Jones proved that she is back on track after a disappointing year when she took a comfortable gold in the women's -57kg.

At the age of 31, France's Gwladys Epangue showed that she is still at the top of her game when she beat 2012 Olympic champion Milica Mandic of Serbia to gold in the women's +67kg final.

The four days of competition (16-19 June) at Crystal Hall were peppered with surprises and exciting matches decided only in the dying seconds.

Match of the Games
The -68kg class bronze medal match was between two lovers of spectacular flying and spinning kicks; world number one Alexey Denisenko and Turkey's Olympic champion Servet Tazegul of Turkey. The two were expected to meet in the final, but instead went toe-toe in spectacular fashion for the bronze, with Russian Denisenko coming out on top.

Story of the Games
British kickboxer-turned-taekwondoka Charlie Maddock, 19, took home gold in her first major Taekwondo competition. "Two years ago, I really didn't think I would be doing Taekwondo, never mind in this position of having won a gold medal," MADDOCK said following her golden-point win over Serbia's Tijana Bogdanovic in the -49kg class.

Family of the Games
Several siblings competed in the event, but only Croatia's identical twins Ana and Lucija Zaninovic came home with medals. Ana won silver in the women's -57kg while Lucija grabbed bronze in the -49kg.

Surprise of the Games
Little-known youngsters Aykhan Taghizade of Azerbaijan, 19, and Karol Robak of Poland, 17, took out the favourites one by one to reach the final of the men's -68kg where the home favourite eventually triumphed. "Now all my opponents know who I am," said Taghizade. Watch his gold-winning bout below.
