Baku 2015 European Games all-around champion Verniaiev falls short

Having won the men's all-around final on Thursday, Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev was unable to sustain the momentum into the apparatus finals at the National Gymnastics Arena on Saturday, leaving Oleg Stepko to soak up the glory.

Verniaiev, who competed in five finals, won only one medal, a gold on vault, saying afterwards "I have nothing to be happy about."

The all-around champion admitted he did not have enough strength for the last day of competition, finishing fifth on parallel bars as Azerbaijan's Oleg Stepko took gold.

The home favourite also collected a silver on pommel horse and a bronze medal on vault.

Greek gymnast Eleftherios Petrounias reigned supreme on rings, whilst Spain's Rayderley Miguel Zapata Santana took the European Games floor title.

Saso Bertoncelj of Slovenia took the pommel horse and Fabian Hambuechen won the high bar on a day that saw six newly crowned European Games champions from six different nations.
