Wonder goal helps make up for FaceTime birth

Portugal's Fonseca scored twice after watching his son being born – on his phone

Three days after watching the birth of his first child back home in Portugal on FaceTime from the Baku 2015 Athletes Village, Portugal's Jose Maria Fonseca scored two crucial goals in his team's 6-5 win over world no.3 side Switzerland.

"I was very strong today, I played with some extra force," said a smiling Fonseca on Wednesday.

There is a good chance that smile was somewhat sheepish, too, perhaps intended for his loving wife.

"First she asked me not to come here, to stay at home with her and I understood that," said Fonseca. "But I am representing my nation. This is my dream and I thought it was important for my son to understand that we have to run after our dreams.

"So I am not there when he is born, but I am giving him a lesson."

Such reasoning convinced Anna Fonseca, who was "screaming for me today" according to her husband. The striker is aware that it may take something a little more concrete to placate his son in years to come.

"I know I have to go home with a gold medal to show him when he grows up why I wasn't there," said Fonseca.

The infant Alfonso was not due until after Baku 2015 but he has already given his dad the first of what the player knows will be a lifetime of surprises.

"He was due to be born on 4 July, but Anna called me at 01:00 on 21 June," explained Fonseca. "He was only born at 15:30. I was talking to her the whole time and to her brother. It was amazing. I was crying all the time - just like a girl."

The rest of the Portuguese beach soccer side joined him on FaceTime soon after the birth, having lived through the 15-hour ordeal with their teammate.

"It was like our baby," said captain Madjer, "these goals are a present for him - and also his wife."

The reunion for the Fonseca family will come on 30 June after the Baku 2015 European Games, but it will be a short one.

"This is the second tough time," Fonseca admits. "After three days at home I go to the World Cup, so she asked me twice to stay at home. It is not easy."

The 32-year-old might need to fill his bags with an Azerbaijan carpet or two, as well as that gold medal. But for now, Fonseca is focused on one type of gift for his family.

"Tomorrow I will score a hat-trick for them," he promised.
